How to Program Your Acura Key FOB
Your Acura key fob is more than just a way to unlock your car. It gives you quick access to your vehicle, adds convenience to your daily routine, and enhances security. If you need to program a new Acura key fob or reprogram an old one, you can do it yourself in just a few minutes.
Follow this step-by-step guide to get your Acura key fob working properly.
Why Program Your Acura Key Fob?
Your key fob is a small but powerful tool. It locks and unlocks doors, opens the trunk, and even starts your Acura remotely if your model has that feature. But if your fob stops working or you need a new one, you must program it to sync with your vehicle.
Luckily, programming an Acura key fob is easy and doesn’t require special tools.

Step-by-Step Guide to Programming Your Acura Key Fob
If you just got a new key fob or need to reprogram an existing one, follow these steps carefully:
-
Sit in Your Car
- Close all doors, windows, and the trunk.
-
Turn On the Ignition
- Insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position.
-
Press the Lock/Unlock Button
- Aim the key fob at the keyless receiver and press the lock and unlock button once.
-
Turn Off and On Again
- Within four seconds, turn the ignition off and back on.
-
Repeat the Process
- Press the lock and unlock button again. Turn the ignition off and on again.
- Repeat this step two more times.
-
Test the Key Fob
- After completing the steps three times, press any button on the key fob to see if it works.
If the key fob does not work, you may need to repeat the process or visit a dealership for assistance.
When to Replace Your Acura Key Fob Battery
If your Acura key fob is not responding properly, it may be time to replace the battery. You might notice that you have to press the buttons multiple times before they work, or that the key fob only functions when you’re very close to the vehicle. In some cases, the fob may stop working completely. When these issues occur, replacing the battery can quickly restore full functionality.
How to Replace Your Acura Key Fob Battery
A weak battery can cause your key fob to become unreliable, but replacing it is a simple process. First, make sure you have the correct battery, which is typically a CR2032 button-cell battery. You can check your owner’s manual or ask your dealership to confirm. Once you have the new battery, start by pressing the small tab on the key fob to remove the backup metal key. Next, use the metal key or a flathead screwdriver to carefully pry open the key fob casing. Inside, you’ll find the old battery—remove it and insert the new one, ensuring that the positive (+) side faces up. Once the new battery is in place, snap the key fob casing back together until you hear a click. Finally, reinsert the metal key into the fob, and your key fob should be back to working as good as new.
